When significant distance lays between opponents, the American Hockey League may switch the format of the seven game series from the accustomed 2-2-1-1-1 to a modified 2-3-2. In effect cutting out a trip by giving the lower seeded team three at home.

And that’s where we find ourselves today. Grand Rapids returns home having split the first two games in Toronto and the Griffins now have three straight on home soil ahead of them.

This however is not unfamiliar territory for the Marlies. After a long […]

Toronto vs Grand Rapids - Will Acton

It’s interesting looking around the league and seeing some familiar faces as the playoffs enter the second round. Oklahoma City, the very team Toronto met in the conference finals last season, opened their series with a win Thursday. Syracuse, a transplanted Calder Cup winning Norfolk team, too find themselves in the final eight.

And of course there’s the Marlies. The team with unfinished business, left hanging last season as the runner up, motivated to win it all this time around. In the first season after seeing Grand Rapids leave […]

After a first round sweep of the Western Conference Quarter Finals, here is a little Marlies info to wet your whistle before round 2.

DESSERT

Toronto’s 3-2 overtime win in-game 3 of the 1st round vs Rochester provided them with a sweep over the Americans in the first round, for the second straight post-season. I never really liked road games.

I understand they’re necessary but there’s nothing that can compare to rolling into a familiar rink, getting some fresh popcorn and taking in some afternoon puck. However, if you were to look outside my window right now you would get why I’m thankful the Marlies are closing out 2012 in Grand Rapids.

Yepp, I said it. Closing out 2012. It’s the last game for the Marlies in the calendar year.

I’m almost sad to see it go. Think of all the incredible things that 2012 […]

Toronto vs Grand Rapids - Jussi Rynnas

Usually I’m game for coincidental stats. But this time I’m not too hot on it.

The Marlies are coming off a 4-3 shootout win. It’s only the second time they have seen the shootout this season. The first time was a Sunday home game against Grand Rapids. A contest the Griffins won 4-3.

Do you see what I’m talking about? A little close for comfort.

That said, I’m all about turning a new leaf; putting past demons behind me; and improving on lessons learned. I don’t expect the Marlies to take […]

So here we go, one more game and we will have all made it through our first three-in-three of the season. The more of these I experience, the more respect I gain for the players.

Thankfully for us all, this is one of only five this season. So we’re 20% of the way through.

Sunday brings with it a game against the Grand Rapids Griffins – AHL affiliate to the Detroit Red Wings. This is one of four meetings between the two clubs, half as many as last season as the Griffins […]
