Toronto vs Grand Rapids - Will Acton

It’s interesting looking around the league and seeing some familiar faces as the playoffs enter the second round. Oklahoma City, the very team Toronto met in the conference finals last season, opened their series with a win Thursday. Syracuse, a transplanted Calder Cup winning Norfolk team, too find themselves in the final eight.

And of course there’s the Marlies. The team with unfinished business, left hanging last season as the runner up, motivated to win it all this time around. In the first season after seeing Grand Rapids leave the North Division, the two teams get set for a best-of-seven series that is fuelled by years of familiarity.

Ahead of game one at Ricoh, here are six things you should know:

  • Marlies had the longest layoff of any of the eight teams between rounds with eight days; Grand Rapids had only five days since defeating their first round foe in game five
  • Toronto collected a point in all four games against Grand Rapids this season, finishing with a record of 2-0-0-2
  • The two clubs played all four games during the NHL lockout meaning only three of the Marlies 13 goals for were scored by members presently with the club (Korbinian Holzer, Will Acton and Carter Ashton)
  • Marlies defenceman Jesse Blacker skated with the Maple Leafs on Thursday and was expected to travel with the team to Boston Friday
  • Griffins went with Petr Mrazek through all five first-round games – a look back in history reveals the netminder’s OHL 67′s team once lost in four straight to Josh Leivo’s Wolves during the 2011 OHL Playoffs
  • Tune into all the action starting at 7pm on Rogers TV and AHL Live
