The Toronto Marlies will face a familiar foe when they open the 2013-14 regular season, as they host the reigning Calder Cup Champions the Grand Rapids Griffins this afternoon at 3pm at Ricoh Coliseum. The last time these two teams met was on May 21, 2013 when the Griffins eliminated the Marlies from the post-season with a 4-3 victory.

The Griffins have several returning players from that squad, including captain Jeff Hoggan, defenceman Nathan Paetsch and forward Gustav Nyquist. Grand Rapids opened up the 2013-14 season last night on the road against Rochester with a 8-1 victory. Last season, the Marlies went 2-0-0-2 in 4 regular season meetings against the Griffins. The two teams are slated to meet 4 times this season, and this will be the only game between the two squads before facing each other in the Outdoor Classic at Comerica Park on December 30th.

Puck drop is at 3pm, catch all of the action on RogersTV (Cable 10/63) and TSN1050. Don’t forget to follow the official Marlies Twitter account (@TorontoMarlies) and join us for the #MarliesLive live chat. We’ll be looking for the #MarliesLive Tweet of the Night. The lucky winner will win a 2013-14 team autographed Marlies jersey. There’s just a few rules and regs you have to check out so read them here.
